A Simple Guide to Taking Good Photographs of Your Horse, Dog, or Cat

Good reference photos make all the difference. You don’t need professional equipment — just a little attention to light, angle, and timing.

1. Use Natural Light

  • Photograph outdoors or near a window.

  • Avoid harsh midday sun; early morning or late afternoon light is best.

  • Do not use flash — it flattens features and can startle animals.

2. Keep the Background Simple

  • Choose a calm, uncluttered background.

  • For horses, a hedge, stable wall, or open field works well.

  • For dogs and cats, a plain wall, garden, or neutral sofa is ideal.

3. Get to Eye Level

  • Try to photograph at the animal’s eye level.

  • This creates a more natural and expressive image.

  • Avoid shooting from above unless it’s intentional.

4. Stand Back When Taking the Photo

  • It’s better to stand a little further away and use higher resolution.

  • Being too close can distort proportions, especially the head and nose.

  • Stepping back helps keep the animal’s features true and balanced.

5. Focus on the Expression

  • Wait for a relaxed, alert moment.

  • Ears forward (for horses and dogs) and open eyes make a big difference.

  • A calm, familiar environment helps capture their personality.

6. Take Several Photos

  • Take multiple shots from slightly different angles.

  • Include close-ups of the head and one or two from a bit further back.

  • Movement shots are nice, but clear, still images are essential.

7. Show True Colours and Markings

  • Make sure coats, markings, and eye colour are clearly visible.

  • Avoid filters — natural colours are best.

8. Keep It Simple

  • Clean tack, collar, or no equipment at all is often best.

  • Avoid busy rugs, bandages, or accessories unless they are important.

9. Phone Photos Are Perfectly Fine

  • Modern phones take excellent pictures.

  • Just make sure the image is sharp and well-lit.
